Family Welcome Letter

Family Welcome Letter

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year, Cedarhurst students and families!

It is my honor to welcome you to the 2022-23 school year and introduce myself as the Cedarhurst Principal after serving as the Assistant Principal for the last two years. For those of you who don’t know me yet, my name is Alyssa McCaslin.  My work with children and families spans over twenty years, including the last seven here in Highline. I believe that what matters most in a school are the people in it and I dedicate my work to building positive strategies that support students to grow into their best selves as learners and citizens. Outside of work, I am a mom of two boys (ages 12 and 15) and two cuddly cats, a loyal Sounders fan, an outdoor lover, and always looking for something new to try or a new place to visit.  I love an adventure and can’t wait to continue the adventure of learning and succeeding with all of you this year!

I can’t do this job alone and am grateful to introduce to you our new Assistant Principal, Taylor Blue, who joins us from a successful teaching career in Highline’s middle and high schools. Ms. Blue believes that all students can thrive if they are seen, known, and valued by their community and will do her best every day to create a school culture where all members of the Cedarhurst community feel welcomed, valued, and appreciated. In addition to being an educator, she is also a mom of two boys (ages 6 and 9), and loves to travel, cook, and listen to good music while going for a run outside.  This year, we also welcome several new staff members to our team and you’ll get to know them better as we begin our school year in our first school newsletter.

Our school is also getting something else new this fall - MORE STUDENTS!  In addition to welcoming back many students who attended Cedarhurst last year, we will welcome many students and their families to our community after the closure of nearby Southern Heights Elementary last June.  We are excited to add them to the Cedarhurst family!  We know our students are kind and helpful, so they will be ready to show our new students what it means to succeed as a Cedarhurst Bear.  Together we will get to know each other by name, make commitments to learn alongside each other, discover our strengths, and strive to be our ‘BEARY’ BEST every day!

As Cedarhurst continues to grow, the success of our students matters each and every day!  This year, our staff will continue to help our students grow into stronger readers and writers using the tools in our new ARC literacy curriculum, plus we’ll have opportunities to learn how you can partner with us to increase your student’s success with reading. We will continue to push our students to be careful, flexible mathematicians, learn about our world through science, and study how to be strong voices for impactful changes in our community by learning about both past and current events in our world.  We also know that many of our students need individualized support to be successful at school and we are continuing to refine our systems to make sure each student gets exactly the right instruction based on their specific learning needs.

Beyond academics, emotions and relationships matter at Cedarhurst.  Our school continues to recognize the success of students through monthly recognition assemblies and our school Prize Palace.  In our classrooms we will use the Second Step curriculum to teach our students valuable skills in relationship building and social interaction so they can contribute to the positive culture of our school.  Our feelings play a big role in academic success and we want to make sure every student has the tools they need to control their emotions and feel like a valued member of our school community.   This year, we will continue to grow student leadership in our student council and develop other opportunities for students to take an active part in our community.

As the planning continues for the upcoming school year, we want to hear about what matters to you!  Your input is crucial to our success and will help make our school the best it can be for everyone we serve.  Students and families are invited to complete our Back-to-School Survey (see below).  We are ready to work alongside all of you to be sure our vision and efforts include what matters most to the Cedarhurst community.  This fall, watch for opportunities to reflect on the survey responses and participate in the conversation of how we can improve and grow together.

We will be posting class list information on Friday, August 26th at noon near the front doors and families are welcome to stop by to see which class you have been assigned to this year.  You should also plan to attend our school Meet and Greet event on Tuesday, August 30th from 5:00-6:30pm.  On this day you can meet your child’s teacher, learn about how to stay connected to our school, and visit with friends old and new.  You can also drop off school supplies at this event or pick up a backpack filled with some basics to get you started!

We hope you all are ready to work hard and have a fun-filled year of learning, growing, and celebrating success!  Together, we will build our community, continue our traditions, challenge ourselves as learners, and celebrate the amazing successes of the students of Cedarhurst Elementary.  Get ready to be your “Beary Best Selves” and help us all succeed on our learning journey this year!

We look forward to seeing and meeting all of you very soon - please be sure to stop by and say hello when you are at school!

In partnership,

Alyssa McCaslin
